Question 2 evaluation

This mid shot of Julia Roberts is very much a like to yhe shot of Tamara's mid shot on the phone.

This shot is simmilar to the shot in our thriller when Sophie and Alex were both sitting an the table.

Our next media task was our Preliminary match cut excercise. Many of the shots here were over the shoulder shots, with some mid shots and close ups. Also, some of the over the shoulder shots were framed wrongly, with the camera being too high. The editing for this clip was done too quickly, so it ja,p from on thing to another really fast. However, the camera work and editing in our final piece was shots and edited with out any problems like these; the camera work for over the shoulder was framed fine and the editing was done to a high standard.
In both our our Preliminary Tasks (the bag swap and the match cut excercise) sound wasn't used, but in our prelim task, the only sound used was dialogue and it wasn't done very well because the quality of it was bad. We used sounds in Beautiful, Dirty, Rich, however, the dialogue made it look ametur because in our filming location, it was very echoey, and therefore, the sound was echoey, and made it seem unprofessional.

A lot of our mise en scene in our preliminary tasks was vey poor because we were using college as our settings and college is plain! so looking at other films like Duplicity, Collateral and The sentinel gave us many ideas for props and locations. Also, watching films in class gave us many ideas about sound and helped us to create suspense in our own thriller!

Evaluation Questions: 3 & 4
This a student thriller called Asleep. It was a shirt film made in 2009 and has had over 7000 views and recieved many positive reviews. Although it hasn't been posted on facebook, twitter or myspace, it looks like a really good film and i would certainly go and watch it.

In our preliminary match cut, we tried to use a wide variety of shots such as; long shots, pov's, over the shoulder shots and shot reverse shots. However some of these were sloppy, such as the close up in our preliminary this was extremely shaky but when we had our close up in our actual thriller, we were more careful and precise. Whereas in our actual Thriller clip, we steadied the tripod and this enabled us to move the camera smoothly, making our close up look much better. - Clip1
EVALUATION: Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progession from it to the full product?
The most important aspect we have improved on is the over the shoulder shots. This is because in the match cut exercise we didn't put much effort in to where the shoulder was in the shot as we didn't realise the importance. However in our thriller we concentrated more on the shots and made sure it was perfect.

The second thing we improved on best was mise en scene. We did not choose appopriate mise en scene in our first task simply because we didn't have time and therefor we could not make out the authoritive figure over the student. However in our thriller we knew what we wanted and put a lot of work in to what the main character should be wearing - we wanted a sopisticated, smart look and simple things like sunglasses made all the difference.

Sound was also a big part of our thriller- it was an aspesct that created suspense, and so we used sound track pro. However in the match-cut evercise we left the original sound.

EVALUATION: Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
This is the Duplicity trailer:
The CIA agent in this film is very similar to the first character in our film who is also an agent.Both characters are wearing sophisticated shades which add not just glamour but also an edge of smartness. They are both confident and walk with long strides to show that.
In our film Julia has been constructed to walk the way she does and look the way she does. She is a confident woman and even when she meets her opponent she doesn't weaken; she is still the dominating character just as Clair is in Duplicity.

The clothing can be called a disguise as it is hiding their thrue identity; Julia changes her shades to glasses right after the swap. The mise en scene represents a upper class social group-they are shown as rich and intelligent people.

The stills are from the 2009 Spy thriller film called 'Duplicity' and our own thriller clip.
This character Claire Stenwick is from 2009 spy film 'Duplicity'. She is represented as a confident and assertive woman due to her items of clothing. She wears a floral dress and shades, which hide her identity and make her seem mysterious. This suggests she is perhaps of middle class as her clothing looks somewhat expensive and the mise-en-scene looks like an expensive part of town. She seemingly has a smirk on her face as she knows she is being followed. The way that she walks along the pavement, shows her confidence as she continues to walk, she glances around and smirks, this shows shes observant and cautious of her surroundings.
This character is Julia Blunt from our film. She is represented as a strong and confident woman also. This is revealed through her items of clothing and posture. She wears shades, a black and white striped dress, high heels and carries a red bag. Her items suggest she too is of middle class or higher, conveying she must have a good job/high earner as she is able to afford these things.
The characters in both films are represented by a construct of their social group, this means that they have been constructed to wear and act a certain way. The women in both are constructed to be confident and assertive, in Dublicity, this however is comprised by the way that Claire is later constructed when she meets Howard Tully. In our film, however Julia stays strong and assertive when met with her employer; Alex and oppsositon (which she doesn't know is). Whereas the men in both films are constructed to be be equally as confident, but not as dominant as expected.
The clothing of both men and females within both films suggest that they are wealthy, this is also portrayed through the mise-en-scene and even perhaps how the characters speak.
Both female characters wear items of clothing such as shades and dresses to show their sophistication and to hide their identities, from others. This exerts that they are intelligent as they know what they are doing, their facial expressions also convey this.
EVALUATION: Question 5: Who would be the audience for your media product?
This is an example of our target audience. She is a tech-savvy young adult which falls in our audience range: our film is for 16 yeal olds to older adults.



The contents of this bag belongs to Sarah, a londoner who is a psychological student in her second year at city university. She finds it hard to keep organized because she lives in a small student living apartment who she has to share with but she likes to stay out and socialise with friends. She likes to read gossip magazines such as Hello! but she also does a lot of reading about her course in uni. She has a part-time job in Boots where she works so she can earn extra money for socialising and watching film- she loves watching all types films from romance to thrillers, and in any language! One thing she can't live without is the internet-she hates not being in touch with friends all the time so while shes surfing the net she'll chat to friends through facebook. She has also uploaded many videos of her freinds and herself on to youtube - meaning she uses it a lot. She loves high-street shopping and can't wait to get a full time job so she'll have enough money to watch lots of films and shop!
Evaluation Question 3&4)
In order to to advertise my film, I would first create a trailer for the film then, upload my trailer onto YouTube. I would then create a fan page on Facebook and post a link to my trailer onto it and posting pictures and notes about the film and cast. I would then repeat this with, Bebo, Myspace, Twitter, Tumblr and even Blogger. On myspace I would post bloopers from the film and the film soundtrack with blogs from the cast to interest people and to try to create a 'Buzz'. I would also create serveral film posters to create even more of 'Buzz' and to appeal to people within different age groups. In order to appeal to a wide audience I would go onto sites where people are interested in amature films and people who are in action/spy films.

Our thriller is a low-budget student thriller - therefore generating money for promoting the movies and showing it on the big screen will not be possible at first. However the 21st century has enabled students to gain a large audience without the expensive costs. Many sites provide a free platform in which students and others could showcase their work and talent.

Youtube is considered to be one of today's strengths to reach target audiences - it is used internationally from music videos and daily soaps. This site can help us to attract our audience quite quick. We can all upload our thriller film or trailer to our page. It will first be watched by friends and family that know about it, then my word of mouth and when people search student videos. The link of the video can also be put up on other pages such as facebook, twitter and other social sites.
Facebook is the most used social site at the moment and many things are possible here. Facebook is used by millions of people and gives access not to just a tech savvy audience but a much larger one as it is used by so many people. The link for the thriller can be put up on our walls and of Friends and family. A fan page can also be made where people can join - this gives us an idea how many people like movie. Twitter can also be used - the link can be put up so people can see.

EVALUATION 1)
Our thriller title sequence is an opening to a movie, with the titles on top. I think that our titles were a little too large, however when editing and creating the titles, they weren't as large as when displayed on the cinema screen. I also think that if we had of taken more time to work on the titles, this would have improved our sequence, as in a way I think the titles ruined it, as they were somewhat too slow and were oddly placed, which was intentional.
In a title sequence, either; a discreet title sequence, an opening to a movie with titles on top and a title sequence where titles appear over a plain background, then the movie starts. I would expect the sequence to engage and intrest and even perhaps thrill the audience, making the title's engage with the audience's brain. I would expect that the shots should represent something to do with the film, if it is discreet title sequence or title sequence where titles appear over a plain background. I would also expect the sequence to set the mood of the film and to give stubble hints about the film to the audience.
I will compare the title sequence to 'Up in the Air' with my own sequence.


This title sequence, follows the convention is that title, credits and the institutional ident appears first, at the beginning of the film. Our film has not stuck to this convention in particular, it has started with a convention of institutional indent and credits first, then the title of the film at the end. Our title sequence also has a total of 12 credits instead of 9. Our sequence starts off with an establishing shot of Kings Place, to obviously estbalish the loaction, this is so the audience knows where the rest of the title sequence is about to happen, this creates suspense as no characters have been introduced. 'Up In the Air' is a title sequence where titles appear over a plain background, it starts off with a wide shot of the clouds, or seemingly 'Up In The Air' which matches the title of the movie, it then pans over across a city scape, and other parts of a country. Some are close ups and others long shots, however all are shot from 'Up In The Air' are shot from a birds point of view.

Analysis of Rough Cut
- Edit out the dialogue sequence - This was as it wasn't really necessary and the exchange of looks instead of words may have had a bigger impact. Unfortunately the clips of the two speaking were too short to edit out and we could only edit the first one out as a result the dialogue has been keep in.
- To see if we had any clips containing a clearer messgae of what the agent(me) was looking at on the computer as it wasn't very clear - We managed to find a clip of me looking at Obama's face, and the computer screen with "G20 SUMMIT" larger than before, somewhat indicating what I was looking at.
- Edit out the footsteps - This was as the footsteps didn't quite correspond with the person walking, making it sound and look out of sync. This was easily done and now the final has no footsteps.
- Phone scene - We were asked to move the scene where I was on the phone infront of another clip to make it correspond, so that the audience could be introduced to the character without being confused as to who they were.
